Once you have decided on some options for layout, the most efficient way to chose between them is by starting with paper drawings.
They do not have to be works of art, and might be quite primitive. Boxes and wire frames are fine, in fact encouraged at this stage.
There will be a lot of trial and error, and experimentation.
